FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH





My family and I recently went on holiday with my friend Susan and her family. She is older than me, yet looks so much younger than other people in their 40's and of course... me. I'm 37 by the way, which is the same age as Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie and half the Hollywood Elite. I'm totally disgusted with myself right now. Both her and her husband have perfect, tight, toned bodies. Not the body builder kind, but the "we work out and you can't tell" kind. We all ate and drank ourselves into a new dimension, but somehow their "dimensions" stayed the same. I on the other hand, picked up enough weight to stabilise a battle ship.

They get their physiques by doing fun, active things with their kids (another reason to hate myself right now). But as for their youthful complexions and almost wrinkle free skin...I contribute that to The Fountain of Youth.

DOING IT EVERY DAY...LIKE CHRISTIAN GREY

After I finished reading the 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy for the 5th time since it's release, it dawned on me...why not do things the way Christian Grey does it??? It's not what he does, it's about how he does it that got me so addicted to this book. Plus the fact that I have the memory of a flea, doesn't help either.

I'm not refering to his rich & famous, wining & dining lifestyle or the other one in his playroom for that matter. I was drawn to the being "in control", eating sexy and slow and working out fast and hard!.

Store Wars

As it is winter in my part of the globe right now, understandable some healthy routines have been neglected. Let's face it...it's too cold for a jog and to dance around in skimpy outfits. Ergo some fat has stored up in some unwanted places around my body.
So imagine my surpirse when I heard my sister weighs 45kgs right now. That is the size of a - in my world!!! Thank God she lives far away.

HUNGER GAMES

With most diets this is exactly what you get...hunger and cravings. It's a game where you win your battle with weight, but lose your will to live. After months of constant hunger and cravings, you are allowed to add more to your diet (or you decide to go off it) and slowly you go back to your old ways and gain weight all over again. You go back on the diet and so the game starts all over again. It's a money making scam if  you ask me.

NEVER GO THERE!!

Nothing makes you feel like the most inferior, oldest and fattest blob on earth than going to a Variety show. The kind of show where slinky yet muscular, well toned goddesses dance and sing on stage in fabulous costumes. Man, if I wasn't straight!!! I felt like a priest on Confirmation day, with self esteem issues.

A lot of people will have their self esteem at an all time low after watching those energizer playboy bunnies, but not me. I will not go there!!! I will use them as motivation to get my figure into shape. They must spend countless hours in the gym and rehearsal. The fact that I don't have time or money for that, is not going to slow me down.

Simple things at home can be used as weights like chairs, tin cans, boots, side tables and heavy bottles.
It does not have to be too heavy, because the longer you use them, the heavier they become. Lifting tables, chairs, etc with your arms or legs are great for muscle building.
Combine this with some vegetables, fruits and lean meats that are easy to burn off,  and it will give you a recipe to perfection.
All you need is half an hour a day, three times a week. Start off with 10 minutes jumping or jogging. Work on your strength with your "weights" for 15 minutes. End it off with 5 minutes stretching to avoid sore, stiff muscles the next day. Nothing to it.
The more often you do it during the week, the better. If you can extend your workouts to 45 minutes or longer a day, even better. The great thing is that you can fit it into your time, lifestyle, schedule and rhythm. All good things come to those who take their time getting there. Nothing is going to happen overnight unless you starve yourself, but in the end it is not a race. You will look amazing soon enough. Work hard during the week, and do and eat what you want over a weekend. Odds are by the next weekend, you will be twice as cautious when you hit the scale on Monday. 

The point is to start now. The longer you wait, the longer it will take. Simple as that.

JUST ONE MORE...

You have tried so many diets and different exercises. Some have worked, but inevitably things went back to the normal and the weight crawled back with VENGEANCE!!!
You are now twice the size you were last year this time and somehow losing weight is harder than ever before. Even worse is if you are on a diet, but it stopped working. Nothing fits anymore and you feel like you are going around in circles and not achieving anything.
I get it!! I really do! I have been there and still have those days too.

Just over this past weekend I picked up 3 Kilograms. That's like 10 Tonnes in Elephant language. Of course I am not daft enough to ask how it happened. I know exactly what happened. Eating lots of crap (I mean A LOT) and not exercising is how it happened. The key is to fix it. Thankfully, that is the easy part. I normally eat what I want, but this past weekend I felt like going ape and be super lazy. I feel so much better now that I had that little psychotic break. I can now get back to normal and do my usual eating with some fun dancing at night to work it all off.
But enough about me.

You have to try to lose weight. Just once more. This time, just eat healthy whenever you can. You know... those home cooked meals that are not deep fried and drenched in preservatives. Simple meals that have gravies with herbs and spices as opposed to thick slimy sauces.  Try lots of leafy greens, colorful fruits and bright shiny vegetables. Drink...you guessed it,...water. If you don't like the taste, toss a  lemon wedge or half a strawberry into your glass.
Eat half of what you normally do. Serving food into a small bowl for yourself instead of a salad bowl is also a good idea.
Exercise when you have 30 minutes free in your day. Everyone has 30 minutes, even if it's before bedtime.
Fitting healthy eating and exercise into your time and lifestyle will achieve far better results.

And when you get days like I had this past weekend, just know...It is OK to not eat healthy sometimes. It is OK to skip a meal. It is OK if you pick up a few pounds. Most of all, it is OK to feel like not exercising.
We all need a break now and again. As long as you eat healthy and exercise MOST of the time, you deserve a break once in a while.
Just try losing weight one more time and do just one more lunge or push up. You have it in you to look fabulously fantastic again and feel like a Superstar when people ask you how you did it.

FAT CHICK IN A SKINNY BODY

Butter!!! If I have to hear one more fat person at work bitch about their weight...aren't we meant to be the funny ones????
Here's a concept...Do something about it, live with it or shut up.
I couldn't stick to a diet if you paid me or my life depended on it. Yet I lost over 200 pounds in 6 months. Big Shocker... I also kept my sense of humour.

Even though I am skinny now, I still think like a fat person. Confidence and happiness comes more often whereas before I had zero, nil, nada and none of it EVER.
So basically, I am a happy, confident chick who is obsessed with weight & still relies on her humour to get by.

There are so many women in my shoes. We only feel confident and happy when we look good, no matter how skinny we get.

My tip for the week...wear what compliments your body type. Drink lots of water this week. You will eat less and retain less water. Give it a try and see how it goes.

WHAT I WOULDN'T GIVE

What I wouldn't give for the perfect body. I'll tell you what... sweet treats and savoury snacks for one thing!~! I would like a perfect body but not at a price.

I know people who eat healthy and exercise and still indulge now and again. I also do, but my problem is that I indulge now and then again later. My curse is that I just look at something and then I pick up weight. Other people seem to have it so easy.

It is so hard to keep my weight constant, because certain times of the month I eat more than other times. My eating habits also depend on the season. Winter is great for anything Chocolate and summer for anything Chocolate and ice cream. I will die if I can't have that!!!

I always go on about eating everything in moderation.
So today I will continue that tradition. For some of us, just eating is a huge issue because no matter what we eat it goes to our hips. We need to exercise and diet and do all the unpleasantries in order to become slim.

Eventually it becomes a matter of maintaining the weight. In the end it is all worth it and a couple of digits added to the scale is not the end of the world. Striving for the perfect body as opposed to the perfect weight....very depressing stuff. It's is a real killer when you feel good because you eat right and work out, only to look in the mirror and see mountains for hips.

So as from today I will promise myself to stop focussing on perfect and just work towards looking as good as I feel. Even if I can do without lumpy mountains on either side of my non-existing ass.

Lie on your bed and kick your legs in the air.

Meditate
Read
Laugh
Socialize
Pray

Combined they all make you look good and feel good. Not just in terms of your self esteem, but because you will have more energy, more life and more control.
You will live longer. When you do eventually die, people will remember you for the incredible full life you lived. Your story will be told for generations about how you lost all the weight and went on to become someone who inspired others. Your legacy will be the kick-ass style in which you took back your life and lived it.

YOUR FUTURE 1 YEAR FROM NOW

A long time ago I was severely overweight. My biggest struggle was motivation to exercise and eat right.
Diet after diet was tried, eating plans were followed and the inevitable gym membership was opened.
Before long, I didn't have time, then I didn't have money and then winter came. These are just a few of the excuses that I used to not diet and exercise.
Even now, there are many days when I really don't have the energy to make something healthy to eat or to exercise. The only difference is that I do it regardless of how I feel, because I know my future.

Yours will be the same. One year from now we will be twice as overweight. Our health would have gone down the drain. Depleted of all energy and will to live, we will have exhausting days filled with only aches and pains. Our skin, teeth and hair will look terrible. Basically it's all DOOM and GLOOM.
Oh! I am sorry. Where you expecting a different answer? If  you don't start or at least continue with your diet and exercise routine, what do you expect to improve?
You can not lose weight by eating large quantities of any food, I don't care how healthy it is. You can lose weight by eating small, frequent meals to speed up your metabolism. You can lose weight if you drink copious amounts of water before and after meals. You can lose weight if you do any form of exercise.
If you do not do any of the above, you will get fatter and unhealthier. It is as simple as that.

One year from now, you will be fatter. One year from now, you will be more depressed. One year from now, you will be more angry with yourself for not starting to change your life a year ago.
If that is not motivation enough to immediately start eating right and finding some form of exercise to do for 30 minutes a day, then you are a dying breed. I mean that very literally!!
Eating right and exercise makes you live longer and look younger.

GOT THE T-SHIRT

Want to hear something crazy insane? There is a diet out there that requires no effort, no home cooked meals, no change in lifestyle, no pain and no sacrifice.
You eat what you want. You do what you want. What is it called? ...DEATH.
A very slow and painful and very early death.
If that is what you want, by all means, carry on living your unhealthy lifestyle. But I know you. You don't want that.
Despite how hopeless things in your life seem like now, it will get better. Things have a funny way of working out when you least expect it. The Universe has a plan for your life. All you need to do is the right thing, in any circumstance. You can apply this to any situation you are in at the moment.
It will get better. Right now the only thing you can do is get rid of those toxic people and toxic food.
Get your life in order for the remarkable change that awaits you. I know money is tight right now, but the least you can do is look after yourself. The Universe needs you to do at least that.
Get those people that emotionally, physically and financially drain you out of your life. It is not selfish to put yourself first. It is necessary. You owe it to yourself to get your life back on track before you can live the life you were meant to and be the person to those you love that you were meant to be.
Get all the food high in sugar, salt and preservative out of your house. Throw everything out that is fattening. You know what they are, you are not uninformed and illiterate. I know you don't have money to restock your entire kitchen. Keep the basic like the meats, vegetables, spices, pastas and canned food. Start getting creative with only spices and herbs.
If your kitchen cupboards are already empty and you don't have meats, vegetables or money to buy them, you are not alone.
First thing is to sell off things that clutter up your home. If  you haven't used it in a year, it's not that important to you. Therefore sell it off.
Start changing your life by buying the following cheap foods.
Potatoes: They are very filling and packed with Vitamin C, B6, Potassium, Manganese and Fibre. You can do so many variations with Potato as a meal or in a meal.
Carrots: Loaded with Vitamin A & K, Potassium and fibre, they help fight off disease.
Leeks: Contain Vitamin A,C & K, Folate and Iron. It protects your heart and keeps it strong.
Lean Chicken: Chicken contains Protein, Tryptophan, Vitamin B3 & 6, Selenium and Phosphorus. It protects against bone loss and boosts your immune system. Chicken is versatile and can be used & cooked in many different ways.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Grape seed Oil. You will need this to fry with. It is better to get Grape Seed Oil, as it does not lose it's nutrients in high cooking temperatures like Olive Oil. It is rich in antioxidants that help fight off free radicals that causes disease and aging and contains unsaturated fats (the good kind).
You can make a lot of different meals with these cheap basics on daily basis. Salads, stews, stir fries or on it's own, the possibilities are endless. If you use different dried or fresh herbs, it will never taste the same as the day before. Keep left overs for lunch the next day.
Start walking, dancing or jogging and drink lots of water. It is free!! You will have an outlet for all your stress, feel better and start looking better. Things will just get better and better from there.

DO LIKE IT'S 1999

What where you doing in 1999? Everyone thought the world will end. Some people partied like it (ergo the song...) and others were too wrapped up in their own life to even care.
Either way, I bet you those were simpler times. Life was less hectic and less rushed. You had more time.
Somehow, the older we get, the faster time flies by. It could be that all this technology designed to make our lives easier, is taking more of our time. Hence the reason so few people get to exercise. They don't have time.
Think back to 1999. There were no i-this and i-that. The modern bricks we lugged around and called "mobile phones", couldn't do half as much as now. You get 3D game consoles, 3D TVs and 3D Blue Ray players. In 1999, Tablets were for headaches. Pads were for...you know what! Everything is HD and wireless and we have words like "star rated" and "energy saving".

Easy solution here. Turn off those gadgets and make time to exercise. Exercise makes you live longer, giving you more time to spend on gadgets and loved ones. If you can squeeze in 30 minutes (only half an hour) into your day for something that gives you long term benefits, don't you think that is a no brainer?
Once you are at your optimal weight, exercise can be bumped down to 3 times a week.
Teeny weeny sacrifice...massive results and benefits.
It's not rocket science (thank goodness because that is redundant these days). It's called going back to basics.
Eat simple home cooked meals, pre-cooked and prepared over the weekend to save time during the week. Spices and herbs can make anything amazing, you don't need expensive "ready made" sauces.
Use fresh ingredients rather than "ready to cook" or "instant" ingredients.
Go back to the good old days. Think like it's 1999 and live like it too. After your fabulous weight loss, you will feel like you could party like...

THE TONIC CHRONICLES

Like you, many people are trying different things to lose weight. Despite eating healthy and exercising, they are also taking Chinese Teas, over the counter diet pills, laxatives, Salt Crystals and all sorts of slimmers drinks.
In the end they are dying of pain and still struggling to lose weight. The facts are simple. They overeat and then drink tonics which gives them the equivalent result of going through a very painful child birth. They spend hours on the toilet and then eat some more. They do the same exercises day after day and still expect something to change.
That is insane!! Of course they lose weight, but sadly they do not keep it off. After a while your body eventually gets used to the tonics and the effects wear off. Unfortunately, the chemicals and ingredients in most of these "all natural" products are anything but natural and you end up damaging your kidneys and liver. In a nut shell,  the effects of the tonic wear off, but the damage to your internal organs continue.
There is also a very damaging effect on your brain. When you eat healthy, exercise or do something right your brain releases Serotonin and Endorphins (a "feel good" chemical). By going through the very painful experience after having had a tonic, your brain releases chemicals to help counteract the pain. The cause and effect results in abnormal heart rate activity and that can lead to anxiety, depression or paranoia.
I have been there. The promises I have made whilst on the "throne"!!!

Weight loss should not be difficult or painful. Eat small portions, drink lots of water, exercise, meditate and sleep. Each on its own does not take a lot of time (apart from sleep).
It does not require sacrifice. Healthy foods are not about eating rabbit food. Healthy eating can be balanced meals with a little unhealthy thrown in there somewhere during the day. As long as you can work off whatever you ate (and then some if you are trying to lose weight), you can eat almost anything. Lots of activity and movement is considered exercise. All you need is 30 minutes out of your entire day. Water is filling and nutritious for your skin, internal organs and brain.
You do not have to go all out Vegetarian or full time fitness fanatic to lose weight and keep it off.

HAVE ROCK...WILL ROLL

Humans. The only species with free will and choice. They can decide to be female or male (or both). They can choose what they want to eat or want to do at any given time. Animals follow their instincts and evolved characteristic true to their specific nature. We follow our need for instant self gratification to the detriment of the "pack" if we get in the mood. 
No wonder we always get stuck between a rock and ...you guess it! We have so many choices where it comes to food, diet, exercise and life in general. Sometimes those choices are hard to make because we fear the consequences or the impact it will have on our cushy lives. 
What to do...what to do??? 
Easy...everything in tiny portions called "moderation". 
If you are obese, you end up ostracized by everyone. You can't lose weight because your body is in too much physical agony to move and you have no energy any way to bother. You end up eating more and life gets worse from there.
If you are too thin, your health is questioned by everyone and you are presumed to be anorexic. You get ostracized because you are also "doing drugs" or something else as far as they are concerned. 
Whether you lose more weight or pick up weight, they will still make assumptions behind your back. Life gets worse from there. 
By being a normal weight, at least you will not go overboard and end up like them or this goat.


Eat healthy, diet or what ever you call it. The key is not to go overboard, because everything we eat and everything we drink is bad for us in large quantities. 
Too much of one thing and not enough of another can affect your health and your life. Balance is the key. 
A little healthy food and a little movement is all it takes from not being caught between a rock and a very unpleasant life experience. 
Trust me, I've been at both ends of the weight debate before. 
Stay away from obese and anorexic where it is safe.

UNCHAINED MELADY

Everything we do has a consequence. What we put into our bodies and how we treat our bodies are directly linked to what becomes of our bodies. Ultimately that affects how we feel, look and how long we get to live.
Whatever spiritual belief you have, your Higher Power gave you only one life. Sadly, many people focus on this one good time rather than the bigger picture. In the end, their one short little life is wasted on a life time of self gratifying moments.

It is time to unchain your belief that nothing can be done to change the way you look and feel about your self.
What most people don't get is that even though that take-out or pastry tastes really good in the moment,  the most self gratifying experience is a healthy lifestyle. When you eat a Pizza, the moment does not last very long. When you eat healthy and exercise you feel great about yourself ALL the time. It is the same feeling men get when they have serviced their cars and they get it back all nice and shiny. They drive down the road and see all the other dirty cars, and they just act so much bigger and better than them.
Women spend a lot of time and money on those 'can not live without" prized possessions too. Whether it is your best shoes, kids or even your hobby, your prized possession is always in mint condition. When you get complimented on them, you feel amazing, right?.

Make your body, your most prized possession. Pamper it, nourish it with the good nutrients and vitamins it needs. Give it exercise to help keep it strong. You already do so much as it is, why not add this too.
You will feel great about what you are doing. You will feel great about yourself. You will look and feel better and better the longer you do it.
Start today. Take the step.
All you have to lose is... weight.

BEAT THE FAT BLOB

You find that you are not your former skinny self and have become a little pudgy (even fat).  Due to circumstances beyond your control, somehow there is no time or money for "scientifically formulated eating plans, design by world renowned doctors of some sorts". Your membership to some gym expired because, hey, you never had time to go anyway. In a wink of an eye, you have become a person that struggles with weight and can't do anything about it. You are feeling like you are fighting a losing battle.
It is hard, especially when you were once skinny to look at yourself now. How time has flown?
It seemed to have happen overnight. It is as depressing as watching Extreme Makeover (not the home edition - the other one).

Fear not my lass. Do not despair. Everything is going to be OK. Just put down that Brownie or Cookie Dough and slowly move away from it. Because I get you and I have your back.
Here's 3 quick tips to help change things around:
1) Forget words like high protein, low carbs or limited calories. Your body sure as hell will!!! It will crave whatever you deprive it of. So don't! Give it tiny bits of heaven, as long as it is the only thing you give it that specific meal time. Then you can eat the healthy stuff it will not crave, during the other meal times. It is always better to eat the bad stuff your body craves in the morning. You get your daily craving over with and work it off the rest of the day. If you don't crave anything, have something healthy as it is easier to work off than unhealthy deep fried, cheese mummified, over salted or over sweetened food. If you don't know healthy foods from unhealthy foods, try diets or diet products available all over the world.
2) I always go on about water and how you should drink lots of it. Today is no exception. Drink water before you eat, after you have eaten, during meal times, before you go to bed, when you wake up, when you have a coffee break... basically ALL day long. You will eat less and lose weight like never before.
3) Whether you work or stay at home (or both) there is always an opportunity to burn fat and work off what you ate. Run everywhere you need to go (the bosses will think you are really busy for starters) and use a Yoga ball to sit on while you work. If you don't have a big ass Yoga ball, get a swivel chair.  Movement is the operative word here. Move and you will lose. After work, find 30 minutes in your day. You are a multi-tasking superstar remember? - it can be done! Use that time to run in one place, do the Can-Can, dance like your on a  Hip-Hop music video audition or just do exercises whilst lying on your back and side.

You have to start somewhere. The fatter you become, the closer you come to an early death. The fatter you are, the more things go wrong (socially, physically, financially and in every other way). Fat is bad, don't let it win. Beat the fat blob before another wink of an eye has passed and it's gotten worse or it is too late.

KATHERINE, KATE, KATY

There's Lady Katherine (formerly Middelton), Katherine Zeta Jones, Katy Holmes, Katy Perry, Kate Beckinsale, Katherine Heigl, Kate Moss and Kate Winslet. They were or are so skinny that they can hoola hoop with a Cheerio.
I am all for skinny, but they have been known to look as malnourished as the charities they support.
Not all of them are as gaunt and weakly thin as they used to be, but that's testimony to their lifestyle.

Nobody wants to be that skinny except for them, it seems. Most women (and pretty much every guy out there) prefer a body like Kate Upton (former Victoria Secret Model).
Curvaceous with a bit of meat on the bones.
I must say, were I not as straight my hair, I would tap that.

So how do you know what is the perfect weight for your body type? You have a Bio scan done. It's all good and well you are within your BMI, but a Bio scan (done at your local gym or health professional) can assess the amount of body fat you have. You can work on the area (my case - areassssss) where you have the most fat.
Most people don't think they need one as their "fat" areas are visibly clear. I am most people. I only like my body when I weigh below a certain amount. If I can't see fatty parts around my stomach or @ss in the mirror, I am happy.
As long as I look curvy without having fat parts looking like I was hand drawn by someone with Parkinson disease, it's all good.

It's nice to look like a VS model, it's even better to not have to go to extreme's like they do. I eat what I want, when I want (just way less than what normal people eat).
I work off what I eat by dancing and drink lots of water to not retain water or dry out like a raisin. After all, exercise is a poor man's plastic surgery.
Getting enough sleep and having some mommy time goes along way when you hit my age.
In the end I just want to keep ageing and death at bay a little longer.

ARE WE THERE YET?

So you have found the perfect diet. You are exercising, drinking lots of water, getting enough sleep and doing everything right. You even lost all the weight. Great!! Now what? 
Sadly, so many people lose the plot here. Stick to that diet. Keep exercising. When you have lost all the weight you wanted, use the diet/ eating plan as a basis for your daily meals from there on. Even if you have small portions of Pizza or chocolate as a snack, at least you ate something healthy that day (it burns off quicker than unhealthy food). The biggest rule is to exercise afterwards. Work off all the calories before it turns into fat. 
That is how you maintain your weight. Coincidentally that is also how you keep losing weight. Burn off the little you eat and stay hydrated. Quite simple really. 
It might sound like you are starving yourself, but you eat small meals on a regular basis during the day. Even better is to eat ONLY when you are really hungry! It doesn't matter if it's only 3 times a day. Some people have a slow metabolism and therefore can barely handle 3 meals. They say that eating 6 small meals a day increase your metabolism, but it doesn't. Trust me!!! My metabolism is as slow now as it was when I was 212 pounds and I have tried almost every diet out there!


Getting there is not hard. The hard part is when you think you don't need healthy meals & exercise and stop doing the right thing. In the end you are left right back where you started. Lose weight and KEEP your weight off to live longer and look younger. 


Keep at it. Change it up a little. Do what you feel will work within the parameters of your lifestyle. 
You can start any day, the end is always closer than you think.

SHORT CUT TO SKINNY

If like me, you can not be bothered with diets and gyms after countless failed attempts at either, here's some good news.

You don't really need them. Every diet in the book is about smaller portions, exercise and bigger glasses of water. Exercise can be walking, dancing or even stripping (if you can get up a pole - let alone afford one)
All these high protein - low carb diets (also conveniently designed into small portions) are really just good for two things. Firstly, they help you eat the "right" foods. Secondly, they shock your body into weight loss motion.
Eating anything and everything in moderation, drinking lots of water, exercise, sleep and a healthy dose of some meditation does the exactly same as a diet and gym.

If you do go walking, jogging or dancing try it with tins cans in your hands, if you can not afford dumbbells.
Eat HALF your normal plate of food and keep the rest for later. Left over home cooked dinners can serve as tomorrow's lunch. They are healthier and save you a fortune! If you are still hungry, drink more water and chew gum. You get the same result - fullness. Also, it is not just about what you eat, but HOW you eat too. Drink water before you eat (I mean like a truck load!!!). Chew a lot while your knife and fork are set down on the plate. Once your food is very fine, swallow and reload your fork.
Eat smaller portions, but more frequently during the day. Do not eat after 6pm at the latest. To help achieve this, pre-cook healthy meals on a Sunday and merely warm them up during the week. Healthy meals is anything not drenched in fats, oil, butter, preservatives, additives or anything high in salt. Frozen vegetables, grilled meat and some rice or potato (aka starch - if your body can handle it) is actually a healthy meal. Do not buy "ready made" gravies or "just add water" sauces. Rather make your own using the vegetable water, the grilled meat extract left in the pan and some flour. Add fresh or ground spices to taste.
Except if you work night shift, exercising at night is not ideal, but if you have no other time to do it, make sure you do it after the kids have gone to bed or have gone out. You only need 45 minutes 3 times a week. More is better, but ultimately your weekends can be spent hassle free at the very least.  Follow that with some meditation to calm you and rest your ticking brain.
Sleep for at least 8 hours a night. No good ever came from going to bed after midnight!!

There you are. Even a lazy person like me lost weight. All other lazy people can too, they just have to want to.

SO MOTIVATED...IT'S SCARY!!!

All over the world there are people right now with huge weight loss success stories. Even my friends have had great success losing weight. They all tried different diets, work-outs and all the other weight loss techniques, but the one thing they have in common...their will to lose weight. 
They are more motivated than presidential candidates right before an election. It is showing big time!! They make me look fat again. 
The great things is, that they listened to others who had lost weight and now they are sharing their successes with those who want to do the same. It's like the circle of life here...which is ironic seeing that we are in Africa. 
Either way, it just goes to show that your story can also one day inspire and motivate someone that gets sent your way. Remember, the universe and all that from my previous blog posts?


Anyway, needless to say this once fatty patty is now motivated to firm up. It's Huge! Not good enough to be thin. Must get firm. No bulges, lumps or bumps for this wicked wacky w... never-mind.
First on the list...download Callanetics.  Second...weight training...Third...stretching. Don't want overly muscular, bulky legs, do we? There we have it. Plan Easy into action.  


Best I get started. This flab is not going to come off by itself!

FEEL IT, LIVE IT.

When you feel like you are about to give up, think of all the things you have overcome.
This is your life and no one can live it for you.
So you have to decide to change your lifestyle. You and only YOU can turn things around.
There is no time like the present.
Make time in your life to lose weight. Somewhere in your day you have half an hour. That is all it takes.
There are no quick fixes, but there are infinite rewards from the day you decide to lose weight. Right from day 1, you start feeling better about yourself. Your energy levels increase. Your mood improves. You feel proud about doing what is right.
Get with the program. Stick to that diet.
The universe has a funny way of rewarding you for making the right choices. You don't just lose pounds, but all your issues too. You end up looking great on the outside and feeling great on the inside. This is the perfect solution to your marital problems, your self esteem and the way you look at life.  In the end healthy eating and exercise is not hard work. It's just a choice. You can choose to be overweight, tired, sore and sickly all the time. But you can also choose to live longer, feel great and look younger. You decide when to eat right, drink lots of water and exercise. There is no rule that says you have to do it everyday. However, your decisions when you go shopping and your decisions when you have time to kill daily, makes all the difference in the end on how you look and feel.

Take it from this 38 year old who used to be obese. Being thin is amazing in every way. At work, at social functions, on holidays, spending time with your kids and in the bedroom, everything is so much better when you feel great and look it too.

LIVE TO TELL YOUR TALE

You have been through so much in your life. Many people have a story, but not like yours. Your story is unique, just like you. You have overcome things that many have not. Yet, here you are searching the great old www for answers to your weight problems.
Your greatest obstacle is YOU. You don't need to find a quick fix solution. You need to find the answers inside of your self. You are not thin for a reason. You know why that is. So face it. Own up to it. You got this way because of the B.S you told yourself. Picking up weight did nothing to fix the troubles that haunt you.
In fact, it made it worse. Your love for food has also compromised your health over and above all this.  Look at yourself naked in front of the mirror. Say out loud the reason why you look this way. That answer is the B.S you have been telling yourself for all this time. That B.S excuse is your answer to weight loss. The minute you realize this, you can turn things around.

You have overcome much worse in your life. Now, it is within your power to overcome morbid obesity (if you don't have it already). Face your food demon. Put him on a leash and choke him with it. Now, is the time to take control where you have lost it.
You know your daily routine. You know your schedule. You know what healthy foods are and which ones you like to eat. You know if you like cycling, walking, hiking, dancing, swimming or gym. Eat the healthy things you like. Do the exercises you enjoy doing in any time you have available.
Forget the B.S excuses you have been telling yourself all this time, because it has done nothing to help. Get yourself back. Get your life back.

The universe has a funny way of sending people into your life when you need them. Everyone serves a purpose, therefore surround yourself with those who can help & support you. Because one day, it will be your turn. This is your story. This will help someone who will come your way one day, so you in turn can inspire them.

DESPERATELY SEEKING

You know you are growing old when you have household plants and they are not there to smoke. When day break is when you get up instead of come home. When you stop growing in length, but grow in the middle.
Everybody over the age of 35 starts looking for the fountain of youth. No exception here....
We watch what we eat, exercise, buy celebrity endorsed wrinkle creams and drink copious amounts of water. That is what all the experts tell us to do.
So why is it not freaking working? For many people, the older they get, the harder they find it to lose weight. When they do (by some miracle) lose weight their faces look all pounded in and wrinkled up. I am a great example of this. You know, someone actually asked me today if I was sick? Thanks for the concern, I am just thine (thin and fine!)
Losing weight is easy, but keeping the weight from be-creeping me from be-after is the problem.
Like many other countries, this weekend is a long weekend. By Tuesday when I get back to work, I will be at least another 3kg's heavier. One consolation when I lose it all again next week, I won't look sick but SIC!! Rather skinny that fat...way more advantages and pros.

Wrinkles is not something we can do anything about, but we can look after our bodies. The only way to look younger (and live longer) is by eating foods rich in Anti-oxidents like dark green leafy vegetables, dark coloured fruit like Blue Berries and Plums, and (wait for it...) drink lots of water. Yeah, not my thing either. We try but it's not something we can do every meal.
So, if you do find the fountain of youth, though, let me know? (and her...)

UPGRADE AND UPDATE

These are words we see every day. If it's not on your PC,  it's on a mobile device I'd like to call spellphone.
People literally go into trances when they are on their mobile cellular phones. A spell is cast upon them rendering them completely retarded.
But that's besides the point. Getting back to my topic...
Upgrade and update is not just applicable to electronic devices. If you are on a diet and exercise regime, think about upgrading and updating them too. Add more healthy options to what you eat. Then kick up your exercise routine a notch or two. Do something that will shock your body out of the routine. If you are not on any form of healthy lifestyle or exercise routine, diet and exercise will totally be a shock to your system!!
Either way when you upgrade or update anything in your life, results are guaranteed.

It's not just your brain that retains memories, your body does too. Muscle memory is the biggest reason why people stop losing weight after a while. Upgrading and updating your diet & exercise regime shakes things up a bit. In the mean time you work on upgrading & updating the way you look as well. Two for one!!!

PERFECTLY DELUSIONAL


You can strive for a perfect body, looks, job and all the rest but inevitably some other imperfections crops up.
Only a delusional lunatic thinks someone else is perfect. A coo-coo narcissist thinks he is perfect. Bottom line, if you don't want to be categorized in the above two descriptions, stop trying to be perfect.

Make peace with the flaws you can do nothing about and change the ones you can. If weight is your biggest issue, stop trying to lose weight for the wrong reasons. The minute losing weight stops being about you, results are quicker and longer lasting.
It's not about looking like a movie star. It's not about how your partner "perceives" you or your own insecurities compared to others. Lose weight to live longer and look younger.

If you pick up a few LB's here and there, go through the emotions, but get over it. After all, you are not competing against someone or trying to please someone else. You are living the life that suits you. A life where you call the shots but do the right thing in order to live longer and look younger.
The sooner you start doing something about it, the better. No one is perfect. Life is too short to not live in the absolute truth of who you are. You are not prefect, but you are living your one life well.
 Focus on your diet/ lifestyle/ eating plan, but try everything in moderation. A little piece of happiness is better than any day filled with self punishment. Don't be too hard on yourself. Go ahead! Have a piece of cake. But just one and don't feel guilty about it .
Diet, exercise, pray, laugh and play. Have fun with your healthy food you eat. Let the choice of exercise you pick be something you actually enjoy. Let losing weight be something that fits into your life and be something that makes you happy.
I know I sound perfectly delusional when I say this, but choosing a lifestyle where partly healthy eating and fun exercise is part of your daily routine, leads to a perfectly happy, individual life.

Egg-cellence


Bunnies, eggs, ducks, chickens...chocolate covered candy centered conductors to HEAVEN!! Yep, it's Easter. Inevitable this time of year someone with a sweet tooth (like me) goes all Terminator on all the different kind of sweets and chocolates there are. Regrettably that also leads to weight gain. A lot of weight gain.


My slender figure is slowly losing shape as my midriff is filling out where a slinky waist used to be (and that just after this weekend?!). I pick up weight by just looking at food...doesn't that suck?
But, if you are on the same situation, do not despair. The cure is simple water and exercise. During the week be good and eat healthy. Drink lots of water before anything is eaten and cut all portions in half. There will be dancing, singing and lots of movement as a form of exercise. By this weekend all the weight would have been lost.




Then you can go ape again on Easter Weekend and do the same next week. It's about living people. Life is too short to count calories, GI content, Kilojoules and all the rest. Especially this time of year.

4 EVERY ACTION...

Every day you work you hiny off. You go to work (problems, issues and scandals), you come home (problems, issues and more work) and you go to bed feeling like a bug on a windscreen. Before you know it, you are broke and praying for payday to come along.
Stress is the number one killer in the world. It can give you cancer, heart attacks, Aneurysms, strokes and BOY!!! the hits just keep coming! So you stress out about being stressed on top of it all. The easy solution is to work off some steam. Most men like shooting a couple of pints of beer down their throats or a rival avatar on the latest gaming platform like Xbox. They also de-stress by playing card games and building 3D worlds. Woman like watching "chick flicks" whilst sucking down a slab of chocolate (we're easy).
What most people undoubtedly will not consider as de-stressing is exercise. In fact, they consider it even more work. To them I say... Hakuna Matata!
Exercise is any movement. You don't need to join a gym if you don't have time or money. (in my case BOTH)
You can simply make space in your bathroom, lounge, bedroom or anywhere else big enough to swing your ass in. Find 30-45 minutes at night (pre-planning and precooking dinners help- FYI) and move your body.
You can do Yoga, Dancing, Kick boxing, Callanetics,  Pilates, Zumba, Rumba, Skipping, Stepping or anything else you know.
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. You exercise - you feel empowered. You don't exercise - you feel like a failure. 
Music and movement is relaxing and healthy. You burn off some steam and fat at the same time.

There is no rule that says you have to exercise every night or else! But if you do not exercise at all, EVER, remember...

DON'T OVER DO IT - RATHER DO IT OVER!

I sit in an open plan office at work. The other ladies (all on the heavy side of the fork lift) order food from the canteen on a daily basis and then bitch about their weight.  Every month-end when the Canteen lady comes around to hand out their bills, I hear how hysterical they go when they realize how much they have spent. (Did I mention I am one of the oldest, but definitely the skinniest? no?)

Moderation is just code for not overeating. Eat small portions, but balance out the good with some bad. You can not eat all bad and then expect good results? Best advice: keep leftover dinner. They are cheaper than buying lunch, and way healthier than the mass produced, oil drenched food you buy.

Moderation is the key to losing weight. The first rule of every diet out there: Cut those portions. You can't have this, but you can have so many speckles of this and so many crumbs of that.
 I am a great believer in small portion, but I eat anything and everything in small portions... Chocolate, cake, ice cream and sweets included. Come on, we all want to eat a Simba Chippie!! Depriving myself and starving myself in order to cut down my calorie intake is not my idea of living. In the great words of Sid the Sloth: "No Thanks, I choose life!!" 

Try to eat healthy, but snack unhealthy on weekends or when you really feel like it. Most of the time, you feel good about eating right and will not be bothered with unhealthy food anyway.
Besides, why would you over do it now on bad stuff and eat the WHOLE lot at once, when you can do it over later?

FAT PEOPLE PAY ATTENTION





Weight loss, diet, exercise, health, fitness...They all sound boring and so time consuming, don't they? On your bucket list these will be the last on the list of 10 000 things to do before you die. So why do it? Reason number One, Uno,  един, Jedan, Een, Yksi, Eine and En is:  Looks. 
You look great, you feel great. You look young and healthy and the world thinks you have the stuff that legends are made of! Job opportunities, social events and your sex life definitely have better outcomes.

Fat people can only do so much at work, because others won't consider you "productive" and therefore not give you the same opportunities (and salary benefits to boot). What the hell...I was just too damn lazy anyway.
At parties you can not dance and stand around chatting for long periods of time. Even if you did you would look pretty awkward being the "social butterfly" that actually looks like a butterfly in that over-sized frock. So people expect you to just sit there and look hungry. Guess that is why I never got that many invites to parties?
The most frustrating part of being fat is the bedroom! Having the lights on not to mention Exotic sexual positions are totally out of the question when your back, knees and hips are killing you already. So it's the quick slap and tickle in the dark doing same boring position, knowing your partner is picturing The Queen Mother rather than you!!!
People don't think that fat people know this stuff, but they do. They pay attention more than other's realize and the truth doesn't suck...The truth Bites!! Hard!!

The only resolve is weight loss, diet, exercise, health, fitness...that stuff. Quality of life is not easy. However it does not take sacrifice and hard work. It takes self control, lots of movement and a willing to change some habits.
How crazy easy is that right???

INSPIRING DIETERS - Got to love them!

Stuff me with cream and call me a Twinky!!! Just yesterday I was with my friends: Paul, Bruce and their lovely ladies. All of them were dieting and exercising. This to me was so inspirational, I ate fruit all day!! I love couples who do the hard stuff together and make it look so easy. Blew me away!! 

I always say if you don't know where to start with healthy eating, follow a reputable diet plan. It is a great start to learning healthy eating habits. Whatever you do, don't make my mistake and leave them to go back to your old ways once you have lost weight? That's when your double chin comes back with a vengeance and your ass takes revenge on all the suffering it had to do. Keep the "good" parts of the diet, stick to the basic plan you learned and eat other things in moderation to prevent weight gain.... AGAIN. Always keep exercising, even if it's walking or dancing. My friends are doing things right and pretty soon they will look as great as they feel.

All diets work if you dedicate yourself to them. All you have to lose is weight, in the end and the little bit of effort your put in now will be rewarded in time.

If you don't like diets, keep this in mind: In the end it's all about smaller portions, healthier foods, lots of water, exercise and low carbs. Sounds simple enough, but it is not.

Looking for inspirational websites or blogs? Anything to keep you motivated when it comes to healthy lifestyles, diets, exercise and fun ideas to lose weight? Join the club. Apart from a few professionals out there, very few websites are inspiring. Diet blogs might as well be diaries, because people are blogging about their dogs, what they ate for lunch and their "worldly" problems instead of inspiring with their story. 
Where are the blogs that tell you it's OK to feel down. Missing a meal or not going to the gym for 1 day is not the end of the world? Where are the blogs that pick you up when your self esteem is at it's lowest? Where are the blogs that really get you? 



If you are reading this right now...I feel your pain. I get you! 
If you want to lose weight, there's no time like the present. Start with baby steps and fit healthy foods and exercise into your life, your time and your terms. 

If you are on a diet, but struggling to cope and battling to take one more awful bite of that same thing you had the last 3 days... change it up with something equally healthy and keep going. The rewards are worth it! Nothing is as good as thin looks and feels. 
No matter where you are in the world right now and what you are busy struggling with weight-wize. Know this... YOU have a story to tell to someone that will cross your path and learn from your experience. You are and never will be alone in this.

Healthy Eating vs Eating Right

If like me tonight, you one day find yourself gearing up for a Fundraiser, which is at a popular Steak House Restaurant, here are a few tips. Step 1 is to drink lots of milk before you go. Step 2 will be to order a starter as a main meal. Step 3 is to drink a full glass of water before you eat. This is where healthy eating vs eating right clashes.
 


You see, Restaurant food is not considered eating healthy. Even their salads are drenched in oil or dressing.
The contents of said salads also have questionable freshness. So order something cooked anyway. Healthy went out the door when you stepped in, honey. Go wild with choice!!!

What you will be doing is eating right, as you will be having a smaller portion than if you ordered a big main meal. Even better if the starter portions are huge, because you will have leftovers for lunch the next day (water does that to you). Chew slowly and enjoy every bite. Also make sure the food is really fine before swallowing as this will help digestion.
Put your fork down while you are chewing. When your mouth is empty, reload the fork with a medium bite and fill her up!! FYI - people will think you have impeccable table manners!!

When you feel that you are no longer hungry (but not yet full to capacity), put your utensils down and step away from the plate!!! The biggest mistake people make is overeat. Do not eat just because you can't resist the taste or because you can not bare to "waste" food.  Savour the taste while you are hungry and leave some for the next day. That way you can relive the whole experience again! It's called a doggy bag, because dogs always save their bone (albeit in a dirty hole) for another time ...(who knew!!)
 Finally, as they say: You eat with your eyes, so best you squint.

GERMS AND CONDITIONS




I have gone viral, but not in a good way. Even though my friend, Maggie, and I eat healthy and exercise, we both got colds. So with our runny noses, headaches and smoker's coughs we look like a sight with sore eyes. All the overweight women whose idea of a healthy diet is one McDonald's burger (instead of 2) and a DIET Coke, are perfectly fine. Go figure!




It's not that we hung out with booger trolls, that touched us.  Unfortunately viral infections and viruses are spread through the air as well. Once they get into you nose, it's pretty much down hill from there. 
Also, the fact that we have officially started Autumn is also a big factor. During the day it's beautiful and warm, but after sunset it gets very cool. There is also a lot more wind and rain this time of year. That means moist conditions with a lot of wind pollination. Ah! Speak of the devil...just started raining. 


One consolation, healthier people get over colds and flue quicker, because of their immune systems. Just have a few more doses of Vitamin C and Zinc. Exercise in moderation and the normal healthy foods should be continued. Yep, we should be fine in a few days....if not, we will have to wear this FOREVER!!!

PILL-VERIZED!!!

Diet Pills, Appetite suppressors, Combination Drug therapy, Natural Diet Pills, Diet Supplements. (nice words?)
Yep, tried some of them too. You want to know the truth? Whether they are "All Natural" or not, they all contain pretty harmful stuff.
The diet pill industry grosses about Fifty Five Million United States Dollars a year (USD$ 55, 000, 000-00). I typed that in the loooong format so it can really hit home! And that's just the portion of sales we know of. They promise weight loss with no exercise, no fuss and no guarantees.  

  • Diet pills contain words like Caffeine, Guarana, Ma Huang and Ephedrine to name a few.  These effect your heart rhythm, blood pressure, sleep pattern and brain function. Most "natural" diet pills contain Caffeine and Ephedra, which can cause small little things like STROKES, BLEEDING ON THE BRAIN and SEIZURES... no big deal. OH! and they are available over the counter. 
  • You then get the Fat Blockers. Before you go: "Great where can I find some" know this...they come with eating plans and have been responsible for the body not absorbing vitamins essential to your body. In fact if you like leaky stools, "wet" farts and bloating go for it. 
  • Metabolism Boosters are great fun. True story:  they cause nausea, increase your heart rate and blood circulation, can cause heart palpitations, strokes and yep..you guessed it...heart attacks (aka death's door). So much fun!!
  • Every one of these "methods" still tell you to "combine with" eating right and exercise for "maximum" results. In the end, you lose weight,  because you ate right and exercised (wow). The diet pill or shake just added energy, which..FYI.. you get when you exercise as well. Some foods even boost your energy levels like fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, dried fruits, carbohydrates, water and coffee. 
  • Combination drug therapy is exactly that: a combination of appetite suppressors, metabolism boosters and fat blockers, overseen by a qualified doctor (Ka-ching), and you have to go for monthly checkups, join a gym and follow a eating plan. Very top secret scientific stuff!
  • Finally we have the Green teas, Herbal teas, etc. that "cleanses" and detoxes your body. I am guilty of drinking teas for "constipation" to help my weight loss. Honestly, apart from feeling like you have taken the "Morning After Pill" (whilst going through PMS and giving birth) the day after having slept with a Giant, is not fun. In moderation (once or twice a week) you literally poo yourself thin, but if you overdo it, you can  damage your colon and suffer from dehydration.

DIET MYTHS





For the first time in human history, most parents will outlive their kids because of obesity!!!  Not war, not famine, but FAT! We can balance work and homes, our budgets and juggle numerous activities, but for the life of Mary we can not balance meals or exercise???
There are so many diets out there and each one claims to be the miracle cure that's fast, easy and painless. They act like we have a skin rash.  Apply twice a day and the Genie will come out and make you look 20 years lighter.
As I have tried and tested most of them, let me share some of my thoughts around these diets.

Since the early 1900's there have been adverts for soaps, rolling pins, girdles and Trilene (a basic appetite suppressant). Problem was that people's body temperature went up and people died from dehydration and fever.  Then over the years the following diets came:
1) The Zone Diet - a fancy name for low Carb diet. Your body needs Carbs to support lean muscle tissue and brain function. No Carbs in your diet sends your body into Ketosis. You produce high Acetone levels and smell like you are decomposing.
2) Astrology Diet - eat right for your Star Sign? Not scientifically proven and mostly low fat and high Protein based. It will make you wish you were never born!
3) Veganism - I'm South African. Steak is cheap and meat is a staple food in this country.  Great if you like B12 injections!!!
4) The Blood type diet - also not scientifically proven and can not be sustained for long periods. Your body eventually craves the things you are NOT allowed to eat.
5) The Cookie Diet - this Cookie consists of food proteins and Amino acids which suppresses your appetite. And Guess what? It comes with an eating plan which incorporates lots of fruits, grains and vegetables. So you lose weight because you eat right, not because of the "Cookie".
6) Liquids Diets, Diet Shakes and Soup Diets: You don't lose fat. You lose water and muscle tissue. Your poo is like water and your limbs like Jello. You pick up weight the minute you go onto solids. Just like new borns~!!!
7) South Beach Diet - You basically divide your plate into 3 sections. One small one for protein, one big one for Vegetables and Fruit and another for something else...I can't remember, because it's essentially a balanced meal worked out for you that you have to shop for, pre-plan, prepare and spend lots of money on. Too much effort!!!
8) Atkins Diet - The company went bankrupt in 2005. Need I say more????
9) Suzanne Summers Diet & Weight Watchers Diet - Just like any other diet in the book. You have to eat right and work out.
10) Raw Food diet - fruit and vegetables in their natural state, straight out of the ground and nothing cooked. Sounds good, sounds so natural and so healthy. Fabulous that you eat "Super Foods" like raw honey, raw chocolate beans and Goji berries but it's not balanced.  Our bodies needs animal proteins and fats too.

So there's my 2 cents for what it's worth. No diet can be done forever and you pick up weight the minute you go off it. The only thing that can be done is eat right regardless, work out and do not overeat (that's what water and gum is for).

BOTTOMS UP!!

Toast life everyday you are alive. Our time on earth is short in comparison to trees and cockroaches.
Raise a glass of multivitamins, because too much alcohol can do this:

Salute the heavens with your bottom doing Yoga or some other form of exercise.


Eat moderately healthy to sustain your looks, energy and health. Since we only have a short time on earth as it is, we might as well not spend it counting calories and living off rabbit food. But we need to eat our leans, greens and beans to live just a little longer.
Laugh everyday and  enjoy the little things in life.
Eat until you have had enough and are no longer starving, not until you can not fit another bite into your tummy.
Finally, get lots of sleep and then wake up toasting another day you have to spend with your loved ones.
