The story deftly takes the reader along with Nicole as she travels from England via Spain and Jersey to Guernsey in her search to find her birth mother. During the course of her quest Nicole has to face some difficult decisions and potentially awkward situations as she gradually discovers more secrets than she was originally expecting to find.
The main characters in this novel are so well-rounded that I could picture them in my mind's eye and Anne Allen's obviously deep understanding of the complexities of human nature enables her to write sensitively about difficult relationships, which in turn enabled me to feel empathy with those characters who had suffered heartache and loss, and with those who felt they had been betrayed by others.
Anne Allen also knows and describes her locations so well that I felt that I was actually there with Nicole, looking at the scenery in Guernsey, or sitting in the garden drinking tea and eating cake, or in Spain, feeling the hot sun on my face. An additional nice little touch is that the story also features some of the characters from the author's first book `Dangerous Waters' (another excellent read) although they do not impact on the main story-line and this book stands alone as a separate novel.
I enjoyed this book so much that I didn't want it to end. More please, Anne Allen!
Thinking now of her parting shot at Tom, Nicole asked herself if she really did want a divorce. They appeared to have everything. Both successful in their media careers – she being an investigative journalist for the same television channel – beautiful, renovated farmhouse near Bath; exotic holidays when they found the time; and no children to restrict them.
