Caddell Brown, born and raised in East Texas, authors a range of speculative fiction. Among her early influences are artists Rene Magritte, film director Andrei Tarkovsky and authors Dan Simmons, Toni Morrison and Ai. It wasn't until after taking a course in Creative Non-Fiction that she grasped what writing could be as a form of expression and while most of her works are fiction, there's always something inside each story that touches on her years as an observant youth. Freakquency, her first novel under this penname, was inspired by the storytelling of her uncles, and other legends and folklore from around the world.

This is not your typical love story with an HEA. You have to be prepared because the characters are very strange and twisted and the story is a bit taboo. The author did an excellent job of character description and story development. The main Character Rick is a Sexy Rock Star but he is not the typical Alpha Male character you find in most love stories. The twists and turns of the story will keep you guessing about what is coming next . There is some blood and gore so you need a strong stomach to get through this book but it is worth it. The writing is excellent. At the end you will be thinking what just happened? The author left the ending open so there maybe room for another book. I can truly say I was surprised by how good this book was it kept my attention from page one. Good job

“Freakquency” is a modern Louisiana gothic thriller intertwined with rock, soul, erotica, and a hefty dose of macabre. The protagonist, Rick Chamberland, is in many ways quite typical. He’s an oblivious pop-star-turned-rock-star with a nearly insatiable sexual appetite and a talent for avoiding meaningful connections in life. This combination of traits would ordinarily leave a character like Rick wide open to a lot of negative outcomes: loneliness, scandal, betrayal, and an inevitable fall from grace. Author Caddell Brown adds another, much more sinister, element to the plot: black magic. To complicate things further, Rick falls for a small town girl he meets by happenstance at a jazz club on a brief return home from touring. Rick’s homecoming opens a Pandora’s box of secrets, both old and new.
“Freakquency” is a page turner and a quick read. It’s a good effort by first time novelist Caddell Brown. Brown’s ability to commingle literary traditions is compelling and it is well-executed with her debut. Brown broaches some moral and ethical themes, but doesn’t take the time to explore them enough. “Freakquency” is a bit scant on discernible subtext, but entertaining nevertheless, especially for fans of thrillers, erotica, and supernatural fiction.
