My forehead’s throbbing. One minute this girl is yelling at me for giving up and the next, she’s laughing. Whiplash.

I squint my eyes at Danielle and whisper with my lips firmly in place, “I will never give up.”

Her voice is high and cheerful, “So what’s your plan?”

Johnny Boggs is a teen with trouble to spare who has learned one thing in life - trust no one. Paranoia befriends him as he moves into his fifth foster home and discovers no one appears as they are, his dreams are not just dreams, and he is supposedly the Prince of Shamayim.

On Johnny’s sixteenth birthday, fate requires him to leave the protection of this world but allows for him to choose to reign over the light or turn to the darkness. A vicious competition begins as two kingdoms fight for his loyalty while two beautiful girls, Danielle and Shay, fight for his attention. Time is running out; a decision must be made. Johnny finds it impossible to resist the beauty of his dreams, nor can he turn away from the one who has his heart.

Footsteps enter my bedroom and approach my bunk. Not. Right. Now. I pretend to be asleep. A cold chill covers my body, making every hair stand on end. Then the bedroom door slams shut. I’m not in the freaking mood! Expecting to see one of my annoying foster brothers, I jerk my head toward the door and punch my fist into the mattress. “What!” I yell out, but no one’s there.

My eyes dart all around the room. Maybe there’s a draft, or someone shut another door causing this one to slam. Doubt it. I’m sure it’s just JC and Miguel trying to get even. “Hilarious, guys, I’m so scared. Now get the hell outta here.” I throw my pillow at the door and myself back on my bed.

An abnormal silence plays with my mind. I decide to reach for my headphones, but I can’t move. My heart jumps. No matter how hard I flex, my arm is stuck to the mattress. My lungs suck in air while every other organ aches under the pressure. An uncontrollable trembling takes over. What. The. Heck. Is. Going. On. My eyes blink over a hundred miles per hour. I can’t move, I can’t speak, I can’t, and then I realize I only have one ability left—sight.

Next to my bed stands a huge man with solid black corneas full of swirling dark fog in his vacant orbs, the Hollow Man. He’s staring me down again, but this time we’re the only ones in the room—no queen, no Camaro, no Mom. This can’t be real. It’s just another one of my crazy dreams. I go along for the ride, like I have a choice. The Hollow Man stands there clenching his fists, causing his abnormally large pecs to flex. My heart races, and my stomach threatens to return my lunch. An intense pain surges as he’s controlling every cell in my body without touching me.

The Hollow Man speaks, “Prince, why are you lying here as if you are a helpless child?” He turns off his death stare, and I feel an instant release followed by the familiar ache of a four-hour football workout in the Texas heat. Is this guy serious? Prince? And how am I supposed to fight something that isn’t really there? My chest tightens, and I try to wake up.

Book Excerpts
Excerpt #1
June, 1974
Kansas City, Missouri

My morning swim doesn’t usually involve corpses. If it did, I’d give up swimming for something less stressful, like coaxing cobras out of baskets or my mother out of bed before ten.
Watching the sun rise over the seventh green is often the best part of my day. I dive into the pool while the water is still inky. When the light has changed from deepest indigo to lavender, I break my stroke, tread water and admire the sky as it bleeds from gold to yellow to pink. It’s a ritual, a metaphorical cleansing, a moment of stolen peace.
After all, I have a teenage daughter, a mother with strong opinions, a Weimaraner named Max who plots to take over our house on his path toward world domination, and a husband. Much as I’d like to, I can’t leave him out.
I kicked off my Dr. Scholl’s, tossed my husband’s button-down onto a deck chair, dove into the dark water and gasped at the sudden, encompassing cold. That shock of chilly water against my skin is better than coffee when it comes to waking up. Maybe not better. Faster.
My legs kicked, my arms sliced and I settled into the comforting rhythm of the Australian crawl. My fingers knifed through the water, anticipating the smooth parting of liquid. They found fabric and the horrific touch of cold flesh.
***
I watched the sunrise from a deck chair. It was not cathartic or peaceful. It was awful. The police swarmed around the pool like industrious ants, pausing only when someone jumped into the water and floated the body to the side. They fished it out and laid it at the edge of the pool.
I turned my head away. I didn’t want to see.
A man wearing a truly unfortunate pair of plaid pants broke away from the ants and sat on the deck chair next to mine. “Are you all right? Do you want a glass of water?” He had nice eyes. Brown. Like coffee.
                “Coffee,” I croaked.
He waved at the ants and a moment later one of them appeared with a thermos. He poured some caffeinated ambrosia into the red plastic top and handed it to me.
                “Thank you.”
“I’m afraid we don’t have cream or sugar.”
“Black is fine.” I took a sip to prove it.
“I’m Detective Jones. Can you tell me what happened this morning?”
                “I was swimming.”
“Without a lifeguard?” I could hear the disapproval in his voice. Detective Jones, purveyor of thermos coffee, wearer of plaid pants, was a follower of rules. I used to like that in a man. There’s something comforting about someone who colors within the lines. Problems arise when a strict follower of rules decides to forsake them. He doesn’t just jaywalk. Nope. A lifetime of good behavior gives him the right to sleep with other women. Or, if he’s slightly more powerful, order a break-in at Watergate. Goes to show, you can’t trust anyone these days. Not husbands. Not presidents. Not cops.

Book Excerpts
Excerpt 1. Sighting The White

James wrestled me to the ground, his thick forearm around my throat, not quite hard enough to choke. “I win!” he declared. “Just say the word, and I'll let go!”
Damn, he was too strong. I tried to reply, but it came out as a garbled squeak. I reached my arms around, trying to get him off my back, but he was too heavy to budge. He pinned me down by pure weight.
We were so distracted by the fight, we didn't notice the wind pick up, moaning through the trees. Branches began to thrash back and forth. My hair whipped into my face.
Then a shadow flew over us.
James gasped.
Pure adrenaline shot up my spine. I threw James to the side, his arms limp from shock. We both stared upward, searching the sky.
A terrible, piercing shriek split the air, a thousand times louder than a bird. The forest fell silent. The wind whipped the trees back and forth as though shaken by giant hands. Several branches snapped off and fell to the ground.
The bowark screamed and took off running. It thundered across the hill at a clumsy, rolling gait. I scanned the sky once, twice, holding my breath. Then, finally, I saw it.
The White circled around a pillar of rock high up on the mountain. This close, it appeared much larger than the distorted beast of my dreams. The shadow of its wings engulfed the entire hillside. Its tail stretched twice the length of its body, longer than the towering trees. The sunset’s glare reflected from its wings, casting its scales in a pearlescent glow.
I couldn't believe my eyes. The dragon had appeared from nowhere!
The sun hovered low in the sky, fading over the opposite ridge of the valley. Nightfall. We had stayed out too long.
I tried to stand up, but James threw me back to the ground, pushing me flat against the grass. “Get down, you idiot!” he hissed. “Its hunting!”
The dragon's tail lashed through the air, snapping several trees in half as it banked and turned. The broken trunks skidded down the hill, upturning rocks and loose dirt, creating a minor avalanche. The rocks bounced downward. James gripped my hand and we braced ourselves. A huge boulder rolled right past us, barely missing our legs.
The bowark kept running. It was painful to watch, like a rock trying to outrun lightning. The White circled once more, then dove from the sky. Its wings created a howling, whistling sound, almost as loud as its screech. It plucked the bowark off the ground in one massive claw, like a hawk scooping up a mouse.
Then, with an elegant twist of its wings, it soared back into the sky. A minute later, it was gone.

Ginger and Caspian's relationship has always had its ups and downs. Now their greatest loss might bring them their greatest gift. As they work out their grief, accept their loss, and figure out how to move forward, they'll discover if their love can stand the test of time.

*This is a standalone novella and a spin-off series from the Hollywood Timelines series featuring Caspian Norwood and Ginger Teague, characters introduced in The One Thing*

Every piece of clothing I own is completely out of season. I throw a pair of red heels behind me and continue digging through the piles of shoes on my closet floor.

“Babe, have you seen my tan Gucci sandals?” I could have sworn I saw them just last week. If my closet weren’t such a huge mess, I’d probably find them with no problem.

I poke my head out from behind the mirror doors and stare at Caspian who is immersed in a video game. He’s ignoring me, a usual when the Xbox is on. I snap my fingers a few times.

“Uh, Babe? Gucci? Sandals?”

He pulls off one of his headphones and looks at the growing mess behind me. “I don’t know what a Gucci is, but there are like a million pairs of shoes behind you. Wear one of those.”

Sounds of gunfight and yelling start back up. He’s playing with his friends, and I hate to interrupt, but this is an emergency. And not just any emergency. A fashion emergency.

I stand up and finish stuffing my suitcase with all the important necessities. Dress for premiere, suits for interviews, and a good book for the down time. Because that’s what I do now. I read a book. I don’t go out and party. I continue talking to Caspian as I try desperately to zip the bag up.

“This isn’t just any premiere. This is the Sundance Film Festival. This is the premiere of my first film. This is the crème de la crème of independent film festivals. This is my dream. This is—”

“Alright, Ginger. I get it. Two Gucci shoes, on the double.” He stands up, turns off the game, and stretches his hands over his head so that the smallest amount of skin peeks out under the bottom of his shirt. He runs his hands through his dirty blonde hair. It’s amazing that a guy so nice would want to be with me. Me, of all people. I don’t deserve him. I can’t pry my eyes off every inch of him as he sorts through my monster of a closet. It’s the sexiest thing a guy could ever do. Helping me without complaining, but he knows how important this trip is to me. It’s bad enough that he has to miss it due to a recording deadline.

“You’re meeting me in Nashville on Monday, right?” I move to my vanity and take out my diamond studs followed by my makeup.

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He gives me a goofy grin before going back to his searching.

Next week is our one-year anniversary. Not the anniversary of when we began dating because that was only months ago, but the anniversary of when we first met on the streets of Nashville. I was on my way to an audition, and he was outside smoking before a sound check. It began as a flirtatious friendship, but developed into something more. It sounds silly to celebrate both dates, but that place will always hold a special place in each of our hearts.

“The paparazzi were sneaking around outside of the house again when I came home. So don’t forget to be careful when you’re out on the balcony. Do you— ”

“Ah, ha.” He holds up two brown high-heeled sandals and presents them to me. “Are these the shoes you want to wear?”

I give a slight squeal before grabbing them and throwing my arms around him. “Thank you, thank you, and thank you. These are gonna look perfect with my new white dress.”

“You owe me one.” He gives me a devilish smirk and grabs the shoes from my hand. They fly through the air before landing on the floor beside my bags. “And seeing that we will be apart for the next four days, I really think I should cash in that favor.”

“Oh, really now?” I press my body up to his, making him back up until he hits the wall.

“Let’s waste some time.”

Wasting time, it’s an inside joke of ours. We don’t waste time for the hell of it, we waste time together. Him and I. He grabs my chin, and we lock eyes. He’s beautiful, irresistible, and finally mine. After wasting my whole life dating scumbag jerks, I now have something even better. A great guy.

“Waste away,” I whisper onto this smooth skin as I trail kisses down his neck.
