About the book:

Omar Esterly is married to his job. But when Omar sets his sights on a potential, family-oriented client, his confirmed bachelorhood becomes a problem. Fortunately, his friend and employee, Devi Boss, has the perfect plan…   Okay, so it wasn't exactly Devi's plan to become her friend's fake fiancĂ©e. Lies aren't her style. However, Omar offers her a big, beautiful raise—enough to track down the missing father she's never known—and Devi reluctantly agrees to the whole engagement hoax… This was supposed to be a no-strings-attached win-win for both Devi and Omar, but when they cross the line between friendship and…well, something more, Devi realizes she’s made a huge mistake that just might cost her both job and friend—falling for her fiancĂ©. EXCERPT 1

“You’re game for anything, right?” Devi compressed her lips and studied Omar through a narrow gaze, taking in the way his overly bright eyes concentrated on her face as if memorizing every pore. Her gaze traveled south to the non-existent rise and fall of his chest and how he pushed his suit jacket aside as he placed his hands low on his hips. He’d stopped breathing while he waited for her reply. That made her more nervous than anything. “Normally I am game for anything, but considering the man asking the question, I’m a little nervous.” She licked her lips. Omar shook his head, swallowing her hands in the warmth of his. “No. This is a great idea. I can’t believe I didn’t see it before.” “I’ll hold back on saying I’m glad I could help until I know what you’ve got pinging around your brain.” She tried to pull free of his grip, but he only grasped her fingers tighter. Her inner voice told her whatever plan he’d cooked up included her and she wouldn’t be thrilled with the role. “Bartow wants a family-first firm. He wants a planner who is married, blah, blah blah.” He dismissed his unfinished words with the thrust of his chin. Devi nodded, her mouth going dry. Was he planning to hire a wife, or about to propose? “I might not be married, but what if I were engaged?” She didn’t want to jump to conclusions about the proposal so she pasted on a tight smile. “Do you have a serious girlfriend hidden away I don’t know about?” The thought unsettled her, but she pushed aside the heaviness in her gut. Omar and relationships mixed like fire and ice. Not that women didn’t find him attractive and vice versa, but his true love would always be work. Most sane women wanted something more than a workaholic commitment-phobe. He shook his head a bit too vigorously. “No. No.” His grip tightened, and she flexed her fingers so he’d loosen his hold. “Hear me out before you shoot me down.” “I’m more curious than ever.” Again, she threw sand over that niggling feeling in her belly. She never jumped to conclusions. Living by the seat of your pants didn’t allow it, but… Why start now? She rolled her shoulders in an effort to relax. Omar pulled her off to the side and out of the crowd moving past them on the sidewalk. His hands shook with excitement, and he swallowed hard before clearing his throat. Always calm and collected, his buildup unsettled Devi, and she tugged one hand from his grip and pressed it against the gurgle growing in her stomach. “How about we announce our engagement? I could pull in some favors and have it in the press Monday morning. That’d still give Bartow enough time to invite us to the meet and greet. And—” “Whoa, whoa, whoa.” Devi’s stomach did a nosedive, and she yanked her other hand from his death grip and stepped back. She twisted one of the bangle bracelets on her wrist. “Our engagement? First off, I didn’t even know we were dating. And second, I am not going to help you get ahead by lying.”

His Princess was a little bit eclectic, a lot of eccentric, and a big time potty mouth. She was outgoing and loud, but held her friends and family close to her heart. She ranted about everything wrong in the world and her wild passion made him fall hard and fast. His life gave him the middle finger when she opened his eyes to the beauty around him - or right in front of him.

Her ‘Prick-a-Doodle-Do’ was uptight businessman through and through. He never saw the fun in anything and she knew right from the start that she could have fun with this man and get him to open his eyes. He made her see that she didn’t have to always be alone, even when surrounded by people. His knack of bringing out the best in her was what made her fall for him, even if she didn’t want to admit it to herself.

Both of them were raised in ‘high society’, but where one was guided by the rules, one had fun going against them. He was her new boss and she didn’t give two hoots about it, so when she was given an opportunity to express her views about a certain subject, she readily agreed.
It was now her personal mission to make the life of her boss a little harder, while experiencing a little fun along the way.

“Bossman, what are my shoes?” I asked and leaned back in my chair to put my feet up on his brand new desk.

“Stilettoes?”

“Wrong, for starters, no one calls them that these days. They’re either pumps or heels. Normally, if they’re designer, you just give people that name. What color is my shirt?”

“Red?” he asked, puzzled at where I was taking this.

“No, it’s burgundy. My hair is also in a low twist to the side, but you’d say that it was a ball of mess on the side of my head. My point is, no female author should write her male lead so . . . girlie. He shouldn’t know what cut her dress is or what the exact shade of her nail polish is, because, putting it simply, men don’t know these things. They don’t want to know. The second real men start showing an interest, their girl will never stop asking for their opinions. All men want to do for an easy life is say ‘Yes, dear’ and scratch their balls while watching a game,” I ranted. All the while his eyes got wider.

“You need to calm down, Princess,” he finally said, but I shook my head.

“But why? As readers, we are basically paying these authors to produce shit work. I don’t want to read that every male character has a monster cock and can give award-winning oral sex. No virgin can deep throat on her first go and the wording, oh my God. Do I really have to read every character announce that they’re coming like a freight train in every sex scene. If the sex is good enough, it should be clear to the reader in the description, not through ‘Incoming orgasm approaching platform three, please stand clear of the gap!’”

Prologue

December 2012
It’s been three months since my life changed in the blink of an eye. I was planning a wedding to the most amazing man – a man who I already thought I’d lost once. Fortunately, he hadn’t given up on us and he had found me again. In the short time we were together, he taught me to trust – to trust in love, to trust in him and to trust in us.
I was an up-and-coming, government editor at the Washington Post – partly because of Rich and partly because of my hard work, perseverance and dedication. I loved my job. It was my dream come true.
Rich had also given me the best gift possible when I found out that I was pregnant. At the time, I didn’t know I even wanted children of my own. It wasn’t really something I thought too much about. I was over thirty and hadn’t been in a committed relationship for a number of years, but once I saw those two little pink lines – I wanted nothing more than to be a mom.
We were planning a Christmas wedding. I knew I would be showing by then, but I had always dreamt of getting married surrounded by glowing evergreens. In fact, Rich and his best man, Blake, had already used their connections and secured the Weather Room on the sixty-seventh floor of Rockefeller Center. Typically, the room was only available from January through mid-November, but Rich and Blake were quite a team and once they batted their eyelashes a few times, the event coordinator caved and allowed us to rent the private space for December 15.
It would have been beautiful, overlooking the magical tree that Rich had taken me to a year earlier. I was so stubborn at that point. If only I had opened my heart to him then, maybe I wouldn’t be sitting here alone now – on the same day that was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.
Just as the first of the day’s tears started trickling down my cheeks, I heard a light knocking on my door. Seriously, I feel like I’d been crying since that day in September. I didn’t think it was possible to have so many tears stored in the human body. I was hoping that eventually they would just dry up, but I was starting to believe that would never happen.
Rising from the couch, I padded my way to the front door. Looking out the peephole, I saw Cassidy waving at me from the other side. I was relieved to know I wouldn’t have to spend the afternoon alone. Earlier, I had insisted that my father go out for the afternoon even though he reassured me time and again that he would cancel his plans.
I had moved back to Michigan right before Thanksgiving. I tried to make it work in Washington D.C. and at the Post, but it was just too difficult. The memories, idle curiosity and constant condolences proved to be too much. I knew everyone meant well, but I just needed to grieve my loss on my own.
I opened the door to my best friend’s outstretched arms.
“Awww, honey, you should have called me earlier. I would’ve been here hours ago,” she said, as I buried my head in her chest.
“This was supposed to be the happiest day of my life, Cass. What happened? Why did I let this happen?”
“It’ll get easier, Brookie – you’ll see,” she added reassuringly, as she ran her fingers through my tangled hair. “Why don’t we pop in a movie – I just so happened to grab Magic Mike out of the Redbox on my way over,” she said with a wink. “If Matthew McConaughey’s voice alone can’t make you ‘O’ then we have more serious issues than I thought.”
“Ohmigod, I think you have officially lost your damn mind,” I giggled. “But, thank you. You always seem to know what I need. And, a naked Channing Tatum is just what the doctor ordered.”
Just as I was setting a bowl of popcorn on the table and getting myself comfy on the couch, my phone rang. I startled from the sudden noise and reached out for it. Looking at the caller ID, I just stared at it for a few more rings.
“Cass, you need to answer it. I just can’t take this right now – especially not today.”
